Location Origin Story

On a late September evening, the sun sets across Howe Ridge, illuminating a mirror image on the glass surface of Lake McDonald. Pastel hues of alpenglow radiate across the sky while Apgar Mountain at the far end of the lake and Snyder Ridge to the left about the south side reflect on the still waters.

This lake has been a sacred place for eons for the First Nations Ktunaxa (a.k.a. Kootenai). They camped all around this lake and at the very end of the lake in the distance, they held special ceremonial dances. They called this place Ya-kit Haqwilnamki (The Place Where They Dance). This is their traditional place of creation, where a spirit first taught the Kootenai people songs and circle dances many years ago.
