Avalanches On Cerulean Lake

Location Origin Story

This is a very rare image of a natural event that occurs as snowmelt from high above on the sheer cliffs of this ancient glacial cirque. Above to the left of this high mountain glacial lake, is Rainbow Glacier, the early processes of spring thaw loosened up the clinging snowpack and gravity pulled the snow down.

Violently tearing rock debris from the semi-circular ring of cliffs above, the debris leaves trails that drape the mountainsides in large inverted fan shapes. Some avalanches leave longer trails that move so fast that they seem to change course and begin to slide back up the mountain. One slide was powerful enough to make it all the way into Cerulean Lake, far below.

About This Photograph

This incredibly rare view was created on a spring afternoon while exploring the Continental Divide up through Glacier National Park, flying across the Livingston Range from Flattop Mountain.

Image Rarity

The image was taken from a moving aircraft, as Zedekiah piloted the aircraft while simultaneously operating the camera.

Once the scene was located, Zedekiah maneuvered the Bluebird into position to be able to film down into this glacial cirque, this was a delicate task to avoid the surrounding mountains and cliffs from interfering with the image.

Lastly, it is impossible to simply walk up a trail and take the same photograph again. This image was very difficult to create, and is truly one-of-a-kind, therefore making it extremely rare.
