Bishops Cap on the Garden Wall

Location Origin Story

This is an incredibly rare and stunning view of the barely seen “back” side of the Garden Wall, located in the heart of Glacier National Park.  In the center of the photo, the oddly shaped protruding peak is called the Bishops Cap, and is an iconic feature of the park scenery, as it is viewable from multiple locations throughout the park.

On the other side of the Bishops Cap, and the Garden Wall lies Logan Pass, the Hanging Gardens, Hidden Lake Pass, Mount Oberlin, and Reynolds Mountain. In the foreground at the base of the mountain below the Bishops Cap, a small frozen unnamed pond is the headwaters of Cataract Creek.

About This Photograph

This intense photograph from within the center of the Rocky Mountains of Glacier National Park was created while flying above the center of the park, following the Continental Divide up though the mountains to the Canadian border. This image is part of a series of images featuring the Bishops Cap from this lofty perspective.

Image Rarity

The image was taken from a moving aircraft, as Zedekiah piloted the aircraft while simultaneously operating the camera. It was taken during absolutely perfect atmospheric conditions, providing a combination of low-hanging cumulus clouds adding a wonderful dimensional component to the visual composition.

Zedekiah used the manner in which these clouds covered the horizon as a backdrop, a scene that is utterly impossible to predict, timing and being in the place-in-space for this scene to reveal itself was crucial to this image composition.

Lastly, it is impossible to simply walk up a trail and take the same photograph again. This image was very difficult to create, and is truly one-of-a-kind, therefore making it extremely rare.
