Castle Peaks in the New York Mountains

Location Origin Story

This is a unique formation known as Castle Peaks, located in the East Mojave National Scenic Area atop the New York Mountains. This unusual formation is easily seen from I-15 as you come down the hill towards the Ivanpah / Primm area towards Las Vegas. As you descend down the hill the jagged peaks are visible across the valley along the top of the mountains.

You can clearly see the smaller formation below the Peaks, and while not an exact copy it looks like a smaller replica set of the larger peaks. It is intriguing that there are no other formations of this type in the surrounding area. Two of them together in such close proximity is pretty neat to see, especially from the air.

About This Photograph

This unique desert mountain scene was photographed in the early evening during the month of October while Zedekiah was flying and exploring the Mojave Desert on the border of Nevada and California near the New York Mountain Range.

Image Rarity

The image was taken from a moving aircraft, as Zedekiah piloted the aircraft while simultaneously operating the camera.

Zedekiah used the light of the evening casting shadows from the low hanging cumulus clouds as an effect to spilt the image horizontally.

Timing and being in the place-in-space for this scene to reveal itself was crucial to this image composition.

Lastly, it is impossible to simply walk up a trail and take the same photograph again. This image was very difficult to create, and is truly one-of-a-kind, therefore making it extremely rare.
