Going To The Sun Mountain ~ Winter
Location Origin Story
To the center right of this vision of the Lewis Range on the west side of Glacier National Park in the Rocky Mountains, you can see a long, flat, and slightly concave mountaintop on the horizon, this is called Going-to-the-Sun-Mountain. To its immediate left lies Logan Pass and numerous mountains surrounding the area known as the Hanging Gardens. In this image, we see Red Eagle Mountain, Heavy Runner Mountain, The Citadel, Clements Mountain, Reynolds Mountain, Hidden Lake Pass, Mount Oberlin, Peigan Mountain, and Dusty Star Mountain.
The First Nations Blackfeet had a different original name for Going-to-the-Sun-Mountain, they called it “The Face of Sour Spirit, Who Went Back to the Sun When His Work Was Done” and was called this because the snowfields on the mountainside, viewed from the west, make the outline of a face. This revered mountain is important to the Blackfeet as a location for vision quests, as it is one of the most accessible major mountain peaks in Glacier National Park.
About This Photograph
This Rare scene of the North Fork Valley was filmed by Zedekiah from his bush plane on a beautiful late winter morning while flying and exploring the eastern side of Glacier National Park along the boundary with the First Nations Blackfeet Reservation.
Image Rarity
The image was taken from a moving aircraft, as Zedekiah piloted the aircraft while simultaneously operating the camera. It was taken during atmospheric conditions that provided a combination of low-hanging cumulus clouds that provided a wonderful dimensional attribute to the visual composition.
Zedekiah used the manner in which these clouds covered the horizon as a backdrop, a scene that is utterly impossible to predict, timing and being in the place-in-space for this scene to reveal itself was crucial to this image composition.
Lastly, it is impossible to simply walk up a trail and take the same photograph again. This image was very difficult to create, and is truly one-of-a-kind, therefore making it extremely rare.
