Home of the Great Spirit
Location Origin Story
There is a stern sense of harsh wilderness in this image of the beginning of the Livingston Range in Glacier National Park. From the left side of this mountainous skyline, there is Stanton Mountain, Mount Vaught, then the double peaks of McPartland Mountain and Heavens Peak. In the foreground, Snyder Ridge runs horizontally to the right becoming Mount Brown. Just on the other side of that ridge in the foreground is Lake McDonald.
Views such as this which present radically different views of known iconic locations within the park allow a small understanding of how the First Nations people viewed these special places. Heavens Peak was called “Red Bird” by the Kootenai, and “Home of the Great Spirit” by the Blackfeet people. Read the full story on Where Eagles Fly
About This Photograph
This wondrous vision of such a spiritually inspiring mountain range was created while exploring the Middle Fork of the Flathead River in the John F. Stevens Valley part of what is known as the Theodore Rosevelt Pass.
Image Rarity
The image was taken from a moving aircraft, as Zedekiah piloted the aircraft while simultaneously operating the camera.
Zedekiah used the manner in which these clouds shrouded the mountains as a backdrop, plus the ending light of the evening as a filtering effect, where timing and being in the place-in-space for this scene to reveal itself was crucial to this image composition.
Lastly, it is impossible to simply walk up a trail and take the same photograph again. This image was very difficult to create, and is truly one-of-a-kind, therefore making it extremely rare.
