Location Origin Story

Clear skies shine bright blue above the rainclouds in these images of the Great Sand Dunes National Park brushed by an unusual localized rainstorm. This interesting phenomenon occurred raining on top of the dunes only, nowhere else in the valley, and there were clear skies above.

The rain clouds were not very thick but were really letting loose equally as spectacular as its timing, lasting a few minutes! This was a localized weather event.

About This Photograph

This unique desert and mountains scene was photographed in the late afternoon during the month of May while Zedekiah was flying and exploring the San Luis Valley below the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range in the Rocky Mountains of southern Colorado.

Image Rarity

The image was taken from a moving aircraft, as Zedekiah piloted the aircraft while simultaneously operating the camera.

Avoiding the storms as they were popping up all around the area he had to dodge in between clouds to find this scene.

Zedekiah used the ending light of the evening as a backdrop, where timing and being in the place-in-space for this scene to reveal itself was crucial to this image composition.

Lastly, it is impossible to simply walk up a trail and take the same photograph again. This image was very difficult to create, and is truly one-of-a-kind, therefore making it extremely rare.
