Red Rock I ~ Rainbow Mountain

Location Origin Story

Rainbow Mountain on the left and Bridge Mountain in the Spring Mountains and the amber-red Sandstone Bluffs of Red Rock Canyon just west of Las Vegas, Nevada. On the far left of the image is Rainbow Mountain, and to its right lays Bridge Mountain. They are the remains of ancient lithified sand dunes from a vast ancient desert that covered a large part of the Jurassic southwest.

Lithification is the process of changing unconsolidated sediment into sedimentary rock. The red color striping across some of the outcrops are from iron oxide or hematite when exposure to the elements caused iron minerals to oxidize or “rust,” resulting in red, orange, and brown-colored rocks. About This Photograph

This vibrant pastel scene was photographed at daybreak during the month of March while Zedekiah was flying and exploring Red Rock Canyon in southern Nevada.

Image Rarity

The image was taken from a moving aircraft, as Zedekiah piloted the aircraft while simultaneously operating the camera.

This required taking off in the dark just before daybreak and then maneuvering into position to film this inspiring, tranquil scene.

Zedekiah used the rolling clouds as a backdrop, where timing and being in the place-in-space for this scene to reveal itself was crucial to this image composition.

Lastly, it is impossible to simply walk up a trail and take the same photograph again. This image was very difficult to create, and is truly one-of-a-kind, therefore making it extremely rare.
