Tsé Bitʼaʼí ~ Shiprock

Location Origin Story

This is one of the most sacred places to the First Nations Diné (Navajo). This solitary Monadnock plays a significant role in their tribal religion, myth, and traditions. This is  “Tsé Bitʼaʼí,” meaning both “rock with wings” and “winged rock“, the remains of the great bird which long ago rescued the people from the dangerous northern lands where they were trapped and brought them to safety here in their present lands.

Located in the Four Corners region of New Mexico, this area is the center of the large swath of lands once occupied by the Ancient Pueblo People, a prehistoric Native American culture of the Southwest United States often referred to as the Anasazi.

About This Photograph

This vast desert scene was photographed in the afternoon during the month of May while Zedekiah was flying and exploring the Four Corners region.

Image Rarity

The image was taken from a moving aircraft, as Zedekiah piloted the aircraft while simultaneously operating the camera.

Zedekiah flew an arcing elliptical pattern and took multiple images of the unique formation to get This wonderful vision.

Timing and being in the place-in-space for this scene to reveal itself was crucial to this image composition.

Lastly, it is impossible to simply walk up a trail and take the same photograph again. This image was very difficult to create, and is truly one-of-a-kind, therefore making it extremely rare.
