Ya-kit Haqwilnamki ~ Lake McDonald
Location Origin Story
This is a very unique vision of Lake McDonald from above the south end of Apgar Mountain. This is the western entrance to Glacier National Park whose towering mountains we see above the far end of the lake. On the left side of the lake is the Livingston Range and on the right side of the lake is the Lewis Range. At the far end of the valley above the lake is the Garden Wall.
Apgar Village lies in the foreground at the western end of Lake McDonald. This area is known by the First Nations Ktunaxa (a.k.a. Kootenai) Tribes People as Ya-kit Haqwilnamki (The Place Where They Dance). This is their traditional place of creation, the location where many years ago a spirit first taught the Kootenai people songs and circle dances.
About This Photograph
This unique vision of Lake McDonald was created on an early May morning. Spring colors have come in strong and the snows are melting high above in the mountains. Flying through the areas west of Glacier National Park resulted in this stunning image of such an iconic scene.
Image Rarity
The image was taken from a moving aircraft, as Zedekiah piloted the aircraft while simultaneously operating the camera. It was taken during atmospheric conditions that provided a combination of low-hanging cumulus clouds that provided a wonderful dimensional attribute to the visual composition.
Zedekiah used the manner in which these clouds covered the horizon as a backdrop, a scene that is utterly impossible to predict, timing and being in the place-in-space for this scene to reveal itself was crucial to this image composition.
Lastly, it is impossible to simply walk up a trail and take the same photograph again. This image was very difficult to create, and is truly one-of-a-kind, therefore making it extremely rare.

This image is offered as a numbered and signed, limited edition of one thousand (1,000) prints.
