~ Glacier Jet Center Lobby ~
Glacier Park International Airport, Kalispell, Montana
This art installation is located in the lobby of Glacier Jet Center at the Glacier Park International Airport, in the Flathead Valley near the towns of Kalispell, and Whitefish, Montana. Above, over the fireplace mantle is the image “Garden Wall From The Banks of McDonald Creek“. The Garden Wall is an iconic location on the western side, within Glacier National Park and McDonald Creek feeds down the valley into Lake McDonald.
This beautiful view is memorialized in a specialized Volumetric Print, which produces wonderful micro shadowing effects across the image that change as you move around to view the print from different angles and distances.
The framing is a custom design, built to match the surrounding woodwork in the lobby. As well this frame design allows for the floating print to easily be changed out to another print of the same dimensions, which provides a wonderful way to continuously enhance the lobby space with fresh landscape scenes.
Below, this Volumetric Print is of the image called “Backbone of the World” and features the front range area of Glacier National Park from within the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains beginning with Going to the Sun Mountain on the far left and Ninaistako (Chief) Mountian of the far right side.
Sitting directly opposite the image featured above the fireplace mantlepiece, this beautiful view is also memorialized in a specialized Volumetric Print, producing an interesting micro shadowing effect across the entire 9′ wide image that provides a wonderful textured visual effect, changing as you move around the print from different angles and distances.
As with the fireplace mantlepiece frame, the framing shown here is custom-built to match the surrounding woodwork in the lobby. With a cleated mounting system that floats the image within the recessed frame space, this frame design allows for the floating print to easily be changed out to another print of the same dimensions, which provides a very efficient method to continuously enhance the lobby space with fresh landscape scenes.
Enhancing the Existing Space
The lobby design existed prior to the current business occupying the space and there existed a desire to enhance the lobby to match the business. This was accomplished by masking the existing fireplace mantle area and coffee bar wall with a custom frame design that covered the existing surfaces completely.
These were the spaces prior to the installation. The fireplace mantlepiece was a recessed area with backlighting and the coffee bar area was a faux marble wall texture framed with a gold glass molding. To provide a faux cover for each space, a framing system was designed to use the existing space as a mounting platform that completely concealed the area behind the framing.
Interchangeable Art System
To provide an additional enhancement to the lobby space, a custom interchangeable print mounting system was designed into the frames. Through the use of a novel cleated mount on the frame and the back of the prints, it is now possible to change our different prints every few months, which provides an updated ambiance to the facility and allows the showcasing of multiple images over time. The following image illustrates the different pints that have been prepared for this ongoing art installation.
